Turning the classroom into a rocket launch site!
For science week we turned the classroom into a launch site for our rocket balloons. We worked in pairs and had a competition to see who could get their balloon to go the furthest. We had great fun doing this experiment.
Read the experiment below and see if you can do it too!
Balloon Rocket
What you need:
- 10 metres of string
- Balloons
- Straws
- Sellotape
What to do:
- Thread the string through a straw then secure both ends as far apart as you can.
- Blow up the balloon and stick it to the straw at two places.
- Make sure the string is as taunt as possible.
- Let go of the balloon and watch it go!
How it works:
Isaac Newton discovered that every action has an equal but opposite reaction. As the air rushes out of the balloon, it creates a forward motion called THRUST. Thrust is a pushing force created by energy. In the balloon experiment, our thrust comes from the energy of the balloon forcing the air out.
